Becoming a Lawmaker

Killis B. Bonner was chosen by the people to be their representative. He was elected in 1876 to serve in the Florida House of Representatives. This is a group of people who meet to create and vote on laws for the state of Florida. Sometimes, official papers would call him by his initials, K. B. Bonner. He served his term in 1877.

After His Time in Office

After his term, Killis B. Bonner tried to get re-elected in 1878, but he did not win. Another person named Robert Bullock won the election instead.

Speaking Up for Voting Rights

In 1881, Killis B. Bonner gave an important statement under oath. He said that his brother-in-law, Moses Foster Jr., was not allowed to vote. This statement was part of a disagreement about an election between Horatio Bisbee Jr. and Jesse J. Finley. This shows that Bonner cared about fair elections and people's right to vote, especially during a time called the Reconstruction era. During this time, many people, especially African Americans, were fighting for their rights after the Civil War.
