The Kincraig Camanachd Club is a shinty team from Kincraig, a village in Badenoch, Scotland. Shinty is a fast-paced sport played with sticks and a ball. This club has a long history, even though it has sometimes paused playing at a senior level. It's famous because several Olympic athletes used to play for them!

The club's main team stopped playing in North Division 3 in 2007. This was because they didn't have enough players. They joined the league again in 2008 but had to stop once more in 2009. Since 2010, the senior team has been taking a break. However, by 2014, the club started working to rebuild its senior team. They hope to join the leagues again in the future.

Club History

How Kincraig Shinty Started

The Kincraig Camanachd Club began in 1920. It was formed when two local shinty clubs, Alvie and Insh, joined together. Kincraig is located near two very famous shinty towns: Kingussie and Newtonmore. Because of this, Kincraig was often seen as the "third team" in the area.

For many years, Kincraig was a great place for players. These were often players who couldn't get a spot on the Kingussie or Newtonmore teams. However, this supply of players eventually slowed down.

Pauses and Comebacks

The club had to take a break from playing in 1955. This is called going into "abeyance." But they started playing again in 1972.

Many talented players have been part of the Kincraig club. This includes Olympic skiers Alain Baxter, Noel Baxter, and Andrew Freshwater. These athletes played shinty regularly for the club in the past. Also, Ronald Ross, a very well-known shinty player, grew up in the Kincraig area.

Winning a National Cup

In 2001, the Kincraig Camanachd Club achieved a big win. They won the Sir William Sutherland Cup. This was their first major national trophy!

Recent Challenges

The club again went into abeyance during the 2007 season. Club members said it was hard to get help from Kingussie and Newtonmore. They felt these bigger clubs weren't helping by lending young players.

The club applied late to play in the 2008 season. But they were allowed to join the league. They played well in 2008. In 2009, they started the season but faced big problems getting enough players. This led to them withdrawing from North Division Three.

The senior team then went into abeyance again. They hoped to return to senior shinty in 2010. However, not enough people showed up at their annual meeting. This meant their plans for 2010 couldn't happen. Dennis Meldrum, the club's president, was hopeful. He believed the club would return to senior shinty soon.

Looking to the Future

In 2011, a new shinty team started in the Grantown-on-Spey area. This team was called Strathspey Camanachd. Several players who used to play for Kincraig moved to Strathspey in 2012.

However, Kincraig showed signs of getting stronger in 2013. They played a few friendly matches. They even visited Lewis for a game. They did not return to league shinty in 2014. But they continue to develop their youth system. Their goal is to enter the league again in 2015.
