The King Block is a special old apartment building located at 117 High Street in Barton, Vermont, United States. It's considered so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 20, 2002. This building was first built in 1870. It was made bigger several times over the years. It's a great example of a "tenement" building. Tenements were homes for many working families in the late 1800s.

What is the King Block?

The King Block is just outside the main part of Barton. It's on the west side of High Street. This building is made of wood and has three stories. It's actually several smaller buildings that were joined together.

How it Looked and Changed

The oldest part of the King Block was built in 1870. Back then, it was a single-family house. By the 1890s, it had changed. It became a home for several families. They shared entrances but had their own living spaces. More changes happened until 1921. That's when the building got its current shape.

The front of the building faces the street. It has twelve sections, called bays. There are four separate doors for people to enter. Each door has a small roof over it. Because the ground slopes, you can see the basement level on the south and west sides. The west side of the building faces a railroad track. It has porches on each floor.

Who Owned the King Block?

Many different people owned the King Block between 1870 and 1921. In the late 1910s and 1920s, a man named James C. King owned it. He was a real estate agent in Barton. That's why the building became known as the "King Block" in the 1920s.

The changes made to the building show how Barton's factories and industries grew. As more people came to work, they needed places to live. The King Block is a good example of large apartment buildings from that time. It has many front doors and multi-level back porches. These were common features for buildings like this in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
