The term Kingdom of Armenia can be a bit confusing because it refers to different important states in Armenian history. These were powerful kingdoms that existed at different times, each with its own rulers and unique story.

What is the Kingdom of Armenia?

When people talk about the "Kingdom of Armenia," they usually mean one of two main periods. These were times when Armenia was a strong, independent country ruled by its own kings.

The Ancient Armenian Kingdom (190 BC - AD 428)

This was one of the earliest and most powerful Armenian kingdoms. It lasted for many centuries, from about 190 years Before Christ (BC) until around 387 or 428 years After Christ (AD). It's also known by the names of its ruling families: the Artaxiad Dynasty and later the Arsacid Dynasty. During this time, Armenia was a major player in the ancient world, sometimes even forming a large empire.

The Medieval Armenian Kingdom (AD 885 - 1045)

After a period of foreign rule, Armenia became a kingdom again in the Middle Ages. This kingdom began around AD 885 and lasted until AD 1045. It was ruled by the Bagratid Dynasty. This period saw a rebirth of Armenian culture and power, even though it faced challenges from powerful neighbors.

Other Armenian Kingdoms and States

Sometimes, other historical states are also called "Kingdom of Armenia" or "Armenian kingdom" because they were important Armenian-led states, even if they weren't always called a "kingdom" in the same way.

  • Satrapy of Armenia: This was an early Armenian region ruled by a governor called a satrap. It existed before the main ancient kingdom.
  • Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia: This was a very important Armenian kingdom that existed from 1198 to 1375. It was located on the Mediterranean coast, not in the traditional Armenian homeland. It played a big role in the Crusades.
  • Kingdom of Artsakh: A medieval Armenian kingdom in a region called Artsakh.
  • Kingdom of Commagene: An ancient kingdom with strong Armenian and Greek influences, located near modern-day Turkey.
  • Kingdom of Sophene: Another ancient Armenian kingdom, often caught between larger empires.
  • Kingdom of Vaspurakan: A medieval Armenian kingdom in the Vaspurakan region.
