Kinniconick is a small, unincorporated community in Lewis County, Kentucky, United States. It is located right next to the Kinniconick Creek. This creek is quite long, flowing for almost 100 miles through the county.

What's in a Name?

The name "Kinniconick" has a cool history! It was even on old French explorer maps, where it was called "Connoconoque." People think the name comes from the Shawnee language. It might mean "willow bark" or refer to a special kind of tobacco. This tobacco was a mix of sweet-smelling leaves and tree bark. When settlers moved west, the creek became known as Kinniconick.

Past Life in Kinniconick

Like many small communities, Kinniconick has seen some changes over the years.

The Old School

The Kinniconick School used to be a busy place. It taught students from first to eighth grade. The school closed its doors in 1984. Its mascot was the Eagles, and their team colors were yellow (often called maize), black, and white.

The Post Office

The community also had its own post office. This was a central spot for sending and receiving mail. Today, the Kinniconick post office is no longer open.
