Kitsault River facts for kids
The Kitsault River is a beautiful river in British Columbia, Canada. It flows into a part of the ocean called Alice Arm. This arm is connected to a larger inlet, which then leads to Portland Inlet.
At the mouth of the Kitsault River, you'll find a few interesting places. One is Alice Arm, which used to be a place where mail was sent and boats would stop. Another is Kitsault, which was once a town built around a mine. There is also Gits'oohl, a community of the Nisga'a people. This area was known as Gitzault Indian Reserve No. 24 before the Nisga'a Treaty was signed.
What's in a Name?
The name "Kitsault" comes from the Nisga'a language. It is related to the name of the local Nisga'a community, Gits'oohl. In the Nisga'a language, "Kitsault" means "at the inside" or "a ways in back (of something)". This makes sense because the river is located deep inside the inlets.
Over time, the name has been spelled in different ways. Some old spellings you might see include Kitzault, Kitzaulte, Gitzault, Chigitsoult, and Kitsaulte.
