Klaus Hänsch's Political Journey
Klaus Hänsch started working in the European Parliament on 17 July 1979. He was a Member of the European Parliament (MEP). An MEP is like a representative for their country. They help make laws for all of Europe.
He was part of the SPD. This is a big political group in Germany. He also worked with the Party of European Socialists (PES). This is a group of similar parties from different European countries.
Leading the European Parliament
From 1989, Klaus Hänsch was a vice-chairman of the PES group. This means he was one of the leaders of this important group.
Then, from 19 July 1994 to 14 January 1997, he became the President of the European Parliament. This is a very important job. The President leads all the meetings. They also represent the Parliament to other leaders around the world.
He took over from Egon Klepsch. After his time as President, José María Gil-Robles took his place.
After His Presidency
Klaus Hänsch continued to be an MEP after his presidency. He served in the European Parliament until 13 July 2009. This means he worked there for about 30 years! He helped shape many decisions for Europe during this long time.
