History of the Koehler Center
The Koehler Cultural Center is found at 310 West Ashby Place. When it was built, this area was considered to be on the edge of San Antonio. For a long time, building homes further north was difficult. This changed after the late 1800s, allowing San Antonio to grow into areas like Midtown and Uptown.
Who Built the Koehler Mansion?
Otto Koehler had the mansion built between 1901 and 1902. He hired Carol von Seutter to be the main architect for the project. Mr. Koehler arrived in San Antonio in 1884. He helped start the San Antonio Brewing Association, which is now called Pearl Brewing Company.
There's a fun story that says Koehler chose this spot because he could see his brewery clearly from the house. The legend says he could tell if his workers were busy by looking at the color of the smoke coming from the smokestacks!
Recent Changes to the House
In 2022, a company called Weston Urban, owned by Graham Weston, bought the house. Their plan was to turn the historic building into a restaurant and a hotel.
What the Koehler Center Looks Like
The Koehler Cultural Center is a great example of Victorian style. It also shows an eclectic architectural style. This mix of styles was very popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
The house has three floors and covers a large area of 12,665 square feet. It even has a ballroom on the top floor. Down in the basement, there's a one-lane bowling alley!
