Kokatahi is a small place located on the West Coast of New Zealand. It's about 15 kilometers (9 miles) north-west of the town of Hokitika. The Kokatahi River flows through this area. It then joins the Hokitika River further north-west.

Farming in Kokatahi

Farming began in Kokatahi in the late 1860s. At first, farmers grew oats and vegetables. These crops were important for feeding the miners and their horses during the gold rush era. Today, dairy farming is a very big part of the farms in and around Kokatahi. A dairy factory opened here in 1900-1901. This helped local farmers process their milk.

Kokatahi-Kowhitirangi School is a school for both boys and girls. It teaches students from Year 1 to Year 6. As of February 2024. , the school has 27 students.

A Historical Event

In 1941, a significant event happened in the Kokatahi area. On October 4, a man named Stanley Graham was involved in a serious incident. This happened after a neighbor complained to Constable Edward Best. Constable Best was a police officer stationed in nearby Kaniere. The complaint was about Graham accusing his neighbor of harming his cattle.

Later, Constable Best returned with more police officers. They tried to resolve the situation. During this time, a tragic event unfolded, and several police officers were harmed. A large search for Stanley Graham began. This search was led by the Commissioner of Police, Denis Joseph Cummings. Graham was found and died on October 17, 1941.
