In 1989, he won a big tournament in Leningrad. He scored 9 out of 13 points. He even beat other strong players like Leonid Yudasin and Alexander Khalifman.
In 1992, he came in second place at the Alekhine Memorial in Moscow. He was just behind Sergei Tiviakov. Aseev played better than many famous players there. These included Vladimir Kramnik, whom he beat, and Mikhail Gurevich.

Aseev played in many important chess championships. He took part in both Soviet and Russian Championships. He even played in the FIDE World Championship in 2001.

He won on a tie-break against Peter Svidler. All the money raised from this tournament went to Aseev's family. Aseev's wife was also a skilled chess player.
