Ryszard Kowalczyk (born 20 February 1937, died 18 October 2017) and Jerzy Kowalczyk (born 1942) were Polish brothers. They were scientists who lived in Warsaw. The University Protest
On 6 October 1971, the Kowalczyk brothers protested against the government. They were upset about how the communist authorities had treated a large group of workers who were also protesting. To show their disapproval, they caused a large explosion. This happened at Opole University. The explosion destroyed a hall where celebrations were planned.
Freedom and Forgiveness
Later, in the 1980s, a big movement called Solidarity grew in Poland. This movement worked for more freedom. Because of this change, Ryszard and Jerzy Kowalczyk were set free.
