Vengalil Krishna Kumar Chatterjee (born 23 April 1958) is a British scientist. He is an endocrinologist, which means he studies hormones and glands.

He works as a professor at the University of Cambridge. He is also a fellow at Churchill College, Cambridge. Professor Chatterjee helps lead the Cambridge Clinical Research Centre. This center is part of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

Early Life and Education

Krishna Chatterjee was born on April 23, 1958. He went to Wolfson College, Oxford for his university studies. There, he earned two degrees. In 1982, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree.

Discoveries and Research

Professor Chatterjee is famous for his important discoveries about the thyroid gland. The thyroid is a gland in your neck that makes hormones. These hormones help control how your body uses energy.

He found out about genetic disorders that affect the thyroid gland. These disorders can change how the gland forms or how it makes hormones. His work has helped us understand more about the body's hormone system. This system is called the hypothalamic–pituitary–thyroid axis.

Understanding Hormone Problems

Professor Chatterjee also discovered how some problems happen when the body resists thyroid hormones. He showed how a problem with certain proteins can cause a disease. This disease affects many parts of the body, including how thyroid hormones work.

His research helps doctors better understand and treat thyroid conditions. This includes both rare and common thyroid problems.

Working with Other Scientists

Professor Chatterjee has worked with many other well-known scientists at Cambridge. Some of these include Sadaf Farooqi, Stephen O'Rahilly, Antonio Vidal-Puig, and Nick Wareham. They have written scientific papers together.

Awards and Recognition

In 2023, Professor Chatterjee received a special award. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). This award was given to him for his great work. It recognized his help for people with endocrine disorders. Endocrine disorders are health problems related to hormones.
