What is Native Title?
The Kupungarri community is located in an area known as the Wanjina – Wunggurr Wilinggin native title area.
Native title is a special legal right. It recognizes that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have traditional rights to their land and waters. These rights come from their traditional laws and customs.
How the Community is Run
Kupungarri is managed by its own group called the Kupungarri Community Aboriginal Corporation. This group helps the community make decisions and manage its affairs.
The corporation was officially set up on August 23, 1985. It operates under a law called the Aboriginal Councils and Associations Act 1976. This law helps Aboriginal communities manage themselves.
Planning for the Future
The Kupungarri community has a special plan for how its town is organized. This plan is called Kupungarri Layout Plan No.1.
It helps decide where houses, roads, and other important buildings should go. The community agreed on this plan in 2003. The Western Australian Planning Commission also approved it in 2004.
