Kwame Rose (born Darius Kwame Rosebrough) is an American activist, artist, writer, musician, and public speaker. He became well-known during the 2015 Baltimore protests. He spoke up against how news channels were showing the protests. He wanted people to understand the full story of Baltimore.
Early Life and Activism
Kwame was born and grew up in Baltimore, MD. He was very good at public speaking. This skill helped him earn a full scholarship to the University of Texas at San Antonio. He was part of their Debate team.
As a student, Kwame believed in using hip-hop music to teach young people. He felt it could help them learn and share their voices. After his first year of college, he saw tough problems in his hometown. This made him return to Baltimore for good. He was determined to help and improve his community.
In 2013, Kwame helped start a group called Brothers In Action, Inc. This group mentored young Black males in Baltimore City. He was on their main board for a while. Later, he started the BE Foundation. This new group aims to support young Black people. It helps them achieve their dreams and goals.
In 2020, Kwame joined the labor movement. He began working with AFSCME Council 67. This group helps workers and their rights.
Speaking Up for Baltimore
On April 29, 2015, Kwame Rose spoke directly to Fox News reporter Geraldo Rivera. This happened during the protests for Freddie Gray. Rose asked Rivera to leave Baltimore. He felt the news was only showing one side of the protests and the city.
Kwame Rose believed the news was ignoring important issues. These included poverty and social problems in Baltimore. He wanted the media to show how these issues affected people's lives. He also wanted them to show how the community was working together to unite and clean up the city.
Kwame Rose was also featured in a 2017 documentary. The film was called Baltimore Rising. It focused on the protests in Baltimore.
