The Sweet Story of Roshen Factory
How the Factory Started
The factory began making sweets way back in 1874. A person named Valentin Yefimov started it. By 1875, it was already quite big. It had 24 yards and about 200 workers.
They made around 200 tons of sweets every year. The factory produced many different kinds of treats. These included chocolate, dragees, candies, and caramel. They also made marmalade, pastille, jam, gingerbread, and tea biscuits.
A New Name for the Factory
In 1923, the factory got a new name. The Soviet authorities named it after Karl Marx. This was done to celebrate his 105th birthday.
Modernizing the Sweet Production
Later, in the 1990s, a businessman named Petro Poroshenko took control of the factory. This happened after the factory became a private company. He used this factory as the main part of what would become the Roshen Corporation. After he took over, the factory was greatly updated. They brought in new, modern equipment from Western countries.
In 2009, the factory's name changed again. It went from "Karl Marx Kyiv Confectionery Factory" to "Kyiv confectionery factory 'Roshen'". A project to make part of the factory look new and exciting even won an award. It received a bronze medal at the International Design Awards (IDA).
