Kʼinich Kan Bahlam II (born May 635, died February 702) was a powerful ruler, known as an ajaw (king), of the ancient Maya city of Palenque. He is also sometimes called Chan Bahlum II. He became king in January 684, after his father, Kʼinich Janaab Pakal I, passed away. Kʼinich Kan Bahlam II ruled Palenque until his own death in 702.
Life and Rule of Kʼinich Kan Bahlam II
Kʼinich Kan Bahlam II continued the important work started by his father. His father had begun to make Palenque even more beautiful with amazing art and buildings. Kʼinich Kan Bahlam II kept this project going.
His most famous addition to the city was the Temple of the Cross. This temple is a very important part of the larger Temple of the Cross Complex. It shows how skilled the Maya people were at building and art.
After Kʼinich Kan Bahlam II died, his younger brother, Kʼinich Kʼan Joy Chitam II, became the next ruler of Palenque. Another brother was likely named Tiwol Chan Mat.
