The Church's Amazing History

The main church building is located at 94 Carrington Avenue. It was designed by architects E. Boyden & Son from Worcester, Massachusetts. The church has a special style called High Victorian Gothic. This means it uses different colored bricks, mostly red, to create a beautiful pattern.

Building the church started in 1873 but stopped in 1875. Work began again quickly with a new pastor. However, a big storm in 1876 destroyed much of what had been built. People worked hard to rebuild it, and the church was finally ready in 1881. A rectory, which is a house for the church's priest, was also built at the same time.

The rectory was first made of wood in a style called Second Empire. Later, in 1917, a local architect named Walter F. Fontaine redesigned it. He changed it to brick to match the church better. The church's tall tower was not fully finished at first. It only reached the third level until about 1910. Then, Walter F. Fontaine designed the rest of the tower, completing its grand look.

Other Important Buildings

At 61 Park Avenue, a convent and school were built between 1894 and 1895. This was called the Jesus-Marie Convent and Academy. We don't know who designed these buildings, but they look similar to other works by the Boyden architects. The school became three times bigger in 1911 to welcome more students.

In 1927, a large chapel was added to the convent. This addition was also designed by Walter F. Fontaine. At the same time, he designed a high school for the church on Greene Street. Today, that spot is a parking lot. The old convent and school buildings have since been sold. They are now a place for older adults to live, called Chateau Clare.

The entire church complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means it's recognized as an important historical site in the United States.

Notable People Connected to the Church

Some important people have been laid to rest at this church. One famous person is Aram J. Pothier. He was a Governor of Rhode Island. Governors are the leaders of a state.
