Who is L'Malouma Saïd?
Her Early Life and Activism
L'Malouma Saïd was born in 1972 in a town called Boutilimit. This town is in Mauritania, a country in West Africa. She was born into slavery.
When she was seventeen, L'Malouma Saïd decided to fight for freedom. She became an activist, working to free people from slavery. She joined a group called the Haratin Liberation Organization (El Hor) in 1990. This group worked to help the Haratin people, who were often enslaved.
She also helped start new political groups. These groups worked against slavery and for more fairness. She was part of the RFD (Ralliement des forces democratiques) in 1991. Later, she joined Action pour le changement (AC) in 1995.
L'Malouma Saïd also led a business group for merchants. She became its president. She was in charge of women's issues in the El Hor movement. She also helped create SOS Esclaves, an important group that fights slavery. Her husband, Boubacar Ould Messaoud, leads this group.
Becoming a Politician
In 2006, L'Malouma Saïd was elected to the Mauritanian National Assembly. This is like being a member of parliament or congress in other countries. She was one of only four Haratin women elected at that time.
She was re-elected in 2013, showing that people trusted her. As a politician, she speaks up for human rights. She works against unfair treatment of people. She also tries to make prisons better in Mauritania.
