Lydia Ashburne was born around 1887. She grew up in a place called Bowers Hill, Virginia. She came from a very large family with fourteen brothers and sisters. Her parents had been enslaved people before she was born.
Lydia was determined to get an education. She graduated from Norfolk Mission College in 1908. After that, she went on to study medicine. She earned her medical degree from Howard University Medical School in 1912.
A Doctor's Career
After becoming a doctor, Lydia Ashburne first worked in Virginia for a short time. In 1916, she moved to Chicago, Illinois. There, she started her long and successful career as a physician.
She worked as a doctor for about 65 years. This means she helped many generations of patients. She was known for her dedication and care.
Helping the Community
Dr. Ashburne did a lot of charity work in Chicago. She provided medical care to many people who could not afford it. She believed everyone deserved good health.
She also helped create the South Side office of the United Cerebral Palsy. This organization helps people with cerebral palsy. Her work made a big difference in the lives of many.
