The L. Hoster Brewing Company refers to a group of old buildings in the Brewery District in Columbus, Ohio. These buildings are very important historically. Because of their history, they were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. This means they are recognized as special places worth protecting.

What Are the Hoster Buildings Like?

Today, there are eight buildings that are part of the L. Hoster Brewing Company site. They were built over many years, from about 1887 to 1967. The building on the far east side was once a Wasserstrom store, built in the 1960s.

The Story of Hoster Brewing Company

The Hoster Brewing Company started way back in 1836. It was located in what is now called the Brewery District. Over time, the company grew very big. It added many buildings to its site. By 1892, it became the most important brewery in Columbus. Its name was well-known all over Ohio.

Around 1920, a new law called Prohibition made it hard for breweries. This law stopped the making and selling of alcoholic drinks. The Hoster brewery tried to make other products. They made soda and a drink that looked like beer. But these new products were not successful. Because of this, the company had to close down.

Hoster's Legacy: A Name Lives On

Even though the original company closed, the name "Hoster Brewing Company" came back. In 1989, a new brewpub opened. It used the historic Hoster name. This new place was located at 55 S. High St. It made many kinds of beer. One popular beer was "Gold Top" lager. This was a new recipe, but it was similar to the old one.

By 1991, the brewpub started selling its beers to local restaurants. However, this new brewery closed in 2001. Another brewing company bought its assets in 2004. This new owner started selling the "Gold Top" beer again in 2005. They used other breweries in the area to make it. In 2011, the Hoster Brewing Company moved to a much larger space. It was a 26,000-square-foot building on the Near East Side.

The old Hoster brewery buildings are now being redeveloped. This big project will cost about $77 million. It was announced in 2019. The plan is to turn the buildings into a fancy hotel. There will also be a rooftop bar and restaurants. Plus, there will be spaces for events, offices, and shops. In 2019, the buildings received $5 million to help preserve their history. The old Wasserstrom store is planned to be removed. A new seven-story hotel will be built in its place.
