LA Sunshine facts for kids
Lamar Hill, also known as LA Sunshine, is an American old-school hip hop rapper. He is a well-known member of the famous group, the Treacherous Three.
Early Music Career
In the late 1970s, when Lamar Hill was about 15 years old, he met other talented artists like Kool Moe Dee, DJ Easy Lee, and Spoonie Gee. They started performing together, and their teamwork was so good that they decided to form a hip hop group called the Treacherous Three. This group became very important in the early days of hip hop music.
Before the group became widely famous, Spoonie Gee decided to start his own solo career. Special K then joined the Treacherous Three. Even though Spoonie Gee went solo, he stayed friends with the group. He even helped them get their first record deal with a company called Enjoy Records, which was owned by his uncle.
Rise to Fame
In 1981, the Treacherous Three moved to another record company called Sugar Hill Records. Another popular group from Enjoy Records, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, also moved there. The Treacherous Three became very popular for their hit songs like "Feel the Heart Beat" and "Whip It."
The group even appeared in a movie in 1984 called Beat Street. It was a popular film about breakdancing. In the movie, they performed a song called "Xmas Rap" with another artist, Doug E Fresh. After this, the group decided to go their separate ways.
When Kool Moe Dee started his solo career, Lamar Hill continued to perform with him. They traveled and performed on stages all around the world.
Life After Music
In 2011, Lamar Hill wrote a book about his life called "L.A. Sunshine: A True Story, The Real Accounts." The book shares his experiences growing up and his journey as an entertainer. It also talks about the challenges he faced in his early adult life.
Lamar Hill has also worked in education. He has held different part-time and seasonal jobs helping students. He worked in after-school programs and as a teacher's aide. Some of the places he worked include Promise Academy Charter School in Harlem, Imagine Me Leadership Charter School in Brooklyn, and Rice High School in New York.
Today, Lamar Hill still performs sometimes with the Treacherous Three. He is very proud of how he helped shape the hip hop music style in its early days. However, he also enjoys having a steady job.
