Sundra LaRue Martin Parker (1935–2011) was an important leader of the Caddo Nation of Oklahoma. She served as the Chairperson, which is like being the president or main leader of the Caddo people. She was elected to this role and worked to help her community.

Early Life and Family

Sundra LaRue Martin was born on July 21, 1935. Her parents were Michael and Wynema Southerland Martin. Her father, Michael Martin, was also known as Silver Moon. He was a talented painter from Verden, Oklahoma. Many of his artworks are kept in the Caddo Heritage Museum.

In 1951, when she was young, LaRue was honored as the Caddo tribal princess. This was a special recognition within her community.

Leading the Caddo Nation

Sundra LaRue Parker became the Chairperson of the Caddo Nation of Oklahoma. She started serving in this important role around the year 2000. As Chairperson, she was responsible for leading the tribe. She worked on important decisions for the Caddo people.

She was re-elected as Chairperson on July 9, 2005. She won against another candidate, Christine Smith Noah. Sundra LaRue Parker served until 2009. After her term, Brenda Shemayme Edwards took over as the new Chairperson.

Later Life

On December 29, 1951, Sundra LaRue married Leonard Parker. Together, they had six children. Sundra LaRue Martin Parker passed away on May 20, 2011. She died in Anadarko, Oklahoma.
