History of the Building

The building was designed by an architect named Fernando Arbós y Tremanti. Construction started a long time ago, on May 1, 1911.

In its early years, the building was an office for the bank Caja de Ahorros y Monte de Piedad de Madrid. People called it El Monte (meaning 'The Mount'). They also called it La Casa de Empeños ('The Pawnshop'). This is because the Monte de Piedad was a type of charity. It offered loans without interest, like a pawnshop, but it was a helpful service. This charity joined with the Savings Bank of Madrid in 1869.

Building Design

The building has a central courtyard in the middle. Its front, called the facade, looks very new and different for its time. It mixes red brick with gray granite stone. The style combines Italian and Neo-Mudéjar designs.
