La Gloria, Jim Wells County, Texas facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

La Gloria is a small, unincorporated community located in southern Jim Wells County, Texas, United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.

A Look Back: La Gloria's History

La Gloria is found about twenty-eight miles west of Linn, along FM1017, near U.S. Highway 281. It's also just two miles north of where FM1017 and FM755 roads meet.

The community started growing a long time ago. In 1908, a post office was opened in La Gloria. By 1914, it was a busy little place with about fifty people living there. At that time, La Gloria had a cotton gin, which is a machine that separates cotton fibers from their seeds. It also had a general store where people could buy supplies, and even telephone service! The San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway also built a train stop in La Gloria in 1914, making it easier for people and goods to travel.

However, the post office closed in 1918. By 1936, La Gloria was mostly a school surrounded by scattered homes and farms. Years later, in 1963, the community still had a school, a water tank, and even an oil refinery. Even in 1993, La Gloria remained a spread-out community rather than a tightly packed town.
