La Jerne Terry Cornish is a leader in education. She is currently the 10th president of Ithaca College. Before becoming president, she held important roles at Ithaca, like being the provost and interim president. She also taught and helped students at Goucher College.
Early Life and Education
La Jerne Terry Cornish was born to Dolores Stokes and Joe W. Terry. She grew up with two brothers.
Cornish earned her first degree, a Bachelor of Arts in English, from Goucher College in 1983. After college, she worked as a language arts teacher for Baltimore City Public Schools from 1983 to 1992. She also helped coordinate a special project called the Canton Project from 1992 to 1998.
She continued her education at Goucher College, earning a Master of Education degree in 1994. Her studies focused on helping students who might be facing challenges. From 1996 to 1998, she worked as a house principal at Highland House. In 1998, she became an assistant principal at Canton Middle School.
In 2005, Cornish earned her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Her advanced degree focused on language, reading, and culture.
Career Highlights
From 1998 to 2005, Cornish taught in the education department at Goucher College. She became an assistant professor in 2005. She made history at Goucher College. She was the first African American former student to earn a permanent teaching position there. She was also the first African American to lead the faculty and help undergraduate students.
In 2018, Cornish joined Ithaca College. She started as the provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. This role meant she was in charge of all the academic programs. Later, she was promoted to provost and executive vice president.
On August 30, 2021, Cornish became the interim president of Ithaca College. This happened after the previous president, Shirley Collado, left the role. The college's board of trustees officially named her the 10th president on March 7, 2022.
Personal Life
Cornish was married to Wayne Cornish. They have one son together. In 2005, she lived in Aberdeen, Maryland.
