Even after moving online, the newspaper faced challenges. In August 2020, the company that owned it, Grupo Extra, announced sad news. La Prensa Libre would stop publishing completely.

The main reason for closing was less advertising revenue. This means businesses were not paying as much to put their ads in the newspaper. This problem became worse because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic was a global health crisis that affected many businesses and economies. Because of this, La Prensa Libre could no longer afford to keep going.
