History of La Tebaida
La Tebaida was founded by Luis Arango Cardona. He was born in Manizales, Caldas, on February 19, 1879. Luis Arango Cardona was one of the first people to study ancient burial sites in Quindío. These sites are called guacas and hold treasures from indigenous people.
His research led to a book published in 1924. It was called Recuerdos de la guaquería en el Quindío. This was the first study of its kind in Colombia.
Founding the Farm and Town
In 1899, Luis Arango Cardona and his brother started a large farm. It covered about 6.7 square kilometers (2.6 square miles) south of Armenia. They named their farm La Tebaida. This name came from a region in Egypt where Christian monks went to find peace and quiet.
To make their land more productive, they divided it into smaller sections. They gave these sections to about 60 families. These families paid the Arango brothers with a part of the crops they grew.
Luis Arango decided to set aside a part of his farm. This area was for all the families to build their homes in one central spot. He planned the streets, parks, and the main town square. The town square was just one block from the main farm house.
Official Foundation Day
The land sections for homes went on sale on August 14, 1916. This date is now considered the official founding day for the town. In just one week, 130 sections were sold. Each section cost 20 pesos.
A competition was held to choose the name for the new settlement. More than 1,000 names were suggested. But the most popular choice was the original name of the farm: La Tebaida.
Growth and Development
In 1917, the settlement became a corregimiento of Armenia. A corregimiento is like a small district or village within a larger municipality. A count of people that year showed 478 inhabitants. There were 254 men and 224 women. This included 45 married couples.
The municipality of La Tebaida was created in 1953. This happened when 85 square kilometers (33 square miles) were separated from Armenia. The first mayor of La Tebaida was Felipe Santiago Mejia. He helped the town get access to clean water.
