Lachlan Lùbanach Maclean was an important Scottish clan chief who lived a long time ago, around the late 1300s. He was the 5th Chief of Clan Maclean. He was also the very first Maclean to live in and control Castle Duart, making him the 1st Laird of Duart. His brother, Hector Reaganach Maclean, started the Lochbuie Macleans family line.
Becoming a Clan Chief
It's not exactly known when Lachlan Lùbanach became the 5th Chief of Clan Maclean. He took over from his father, Iain Dubh mac Gilliemore Maclean, likely before the year 1365.
Important Events as Chief
After becoming chief, Lachlan had some disagreements with other clans. These included the MacDougalls and the Camerons.
Lachlan lived during the time of John of Islay, Lord of the Isles. John was a very powerful leader who controlled many islands. When John passed away in 1386, his son Domhnall of Islay, Lord of the Isles took over.
To make sure his family's land was safe, Lachlan got a special document called a charter from Domhnall in 1390. This charter officially confirmed that the land belonged to Lachlan and his family.
His Family
Lachlan Lùbanach married Mary Mcdonald. She was the daughter of John of Islay, Lord of the Isles. They had five sons together:
- Eachuinn Ruadh nan cath Maclean, also known as Red Hector. He became the next chief at Duart after his father.
- John Maclean
- Lachlan Maclean
- Neil Maclean
- Somerled Maclean
Lachlan Lùbanach lived to be quite old. The exact year he passed away isn't known, but it was before 1405. We know this because his son, Hector, was a witness to an important document in 1405.
What He Left Behind
Lachlan Lùbanach is often seen as the first true Maclean of Duart. This is because the oldest official document, or charter, that we have is in his name. However, this doesn't mean he was the very first person to own the land. It just means he was the first for whom we have a written record.
A story about Lachlan's marriage and how he came to own Duart Castle was written by Fitzroy Maclean. This story can be found in his book called The Isles of The Sea.
