Lachlan Mitchell's Rugby Journey
Playing in Sydney
When Lachlan was a student, he played rugby for Sydney University. He also trained with the New South Wales Waratahs, a well-known rugby team. This helped him get ready for a professional career.
Time with London Wasps
In 2008, Lachlan Mitchell moved to England to join London Wasps. He played 31 games for their main team. He was a strong player for the "A League" side too. A former England player, Trevor Woodman, suggested that Wasps sign Lachlan.
Ian McGeechan, who was in charge of rugby at Wasps, was very happy about Lachlan joining. He said that Lachlan would both learn from and help the Wasps team.
Helping the Community
Lachlan also spent time helping people off the field. In December 2008, he visited children at Wexham Park Hospital. He gave them Christmas cards and presents, which was a kind gesture.
The Crossbar Challenge
In April 2009, Lachlan and his Wasps teammates took part in a fun challenge. It was called the 'Crossbar Challenge' on Sky Sports. Players had to throw a rugby ball over the crossbar of the goal posts. Lachlan was the only player who successfully threw the ball through the posts!
He then went head-to-head against a famous Welsh rugby player, Scott Quinnell. They competed to see who could throw the ball the furthest. Scott threw 41 metres, but Lachlan threw 41.2 metres. This meant Lachlan won the challenge!
A Brave Tackle
On October 4, 2009, Lachlan showed how brave he was during a game. He made a try-saving tackle against Northampton Saints. This tackle stopped the other team from scoring. Lachlan was knocked out during the tackle and needed medical help on the field.
He was taken to the hospital, but thankfully, he was okay. Doctors said he had a mild concussion (a brain injury from a hit). He followed a strict recovery plan. Just a few days later, he was back playing rugby.
Tony Hanks, the Wasps director, praised Lachlan's bravery. He said, "There aren't too many braver than Lachie." He added that the tackle was a "big moment" for the team.
Playing for Melbourne Rebels
On March 15, 2010, London Wasps announced that Lachlan would move back to Australia. He joined the Melbourne Rebels team. This team plays in the Super Rugby competition. Another Wasps player, Danny Cipriani, also joined the Rebels.
In 2011, Lachlan played in a pre-season game against Fiji. He scored an exciting try early in that game. On May 28, 2012, Lachlan became the Rebels' most experienced player. This means he had played the most games for the team at that time.
