The Ladies Literary Club Clubhouse is a special historic building located in Salt Lake City, Utah. It was built in 1913 and has a unique design. This building is famous for its connection to one of the oldest women's clubs in the western United States.

A Home for Learning and Community

The Ladies Literary Club Clubhouse is found at 850 East South Temple Street in Salt Lake City. It was designed by architects Treganza & Ware. The building shows off a cool style called Prairie School. This style often features strong horizontal lines and open spaces.

The Ladies Literary Club

The club itself started way back in 1877. This makes it the oldest women's club west of the Mississippi River in the United States! Before this club, there was a group called the Blue Tea literary club, which began in 1876. Jennie Anderson Froiseth was the person who founded that first group.

The very first president of the Ladies Literary Club was Mrs. Eliza Kirtley Royle. Her own home, built in 1875, is also listed as a historic place.

A Recognized Historic Place

Because of its importance, the Clubhouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. This means it's officially recognized as a building that is important to the history of the country.

New Beginnings for the Clubhouse

In 2013, the Ladies Literary Club decided to give their historic building to the Utah Heritage Foundation. This foundation is a non-profit group that works to save and celebrate Utah's historic buildings. The foundation planned to fix up the Clubhouse and use it as a place for community events.

For two years, the Utah Heritage Foundation managed the Clubhouse. They hosted many cultural, artistic, and private events. Thousands of people got to visit and enjoy this amazing building.

A Creative Future

In April 2016, the Utah Heritage Foundation sold the Clubhouse to Photo Collective Studios. This group is made up of young artists and business owners from Salt Lake City. They bought the building to continue its legacy of supporting arts and culture.

To make sure the building stays special, a special agreement was made. This agreement protects the historic look of both the inside and outside of the Clubhouse. The Utah Heritage Foundation was very happy with this new owner. They felt that Photo Collective Studios shared a passion for preserving history and creativity in Salt Lake City.

The goal was for the building to keep being used by the public. It would continue the original ideas of the Ladies Literary Club, which were all about cultural enrichment.

Renovations and a New Name

After Photo Collective Studios took over, they started making improvements to the Clubhouse. From April to October 2016, they did both small and big renovations. This included making the original hardwood floors look new again.

To honor the building's past, the directors decided to rename the historic venue simply "The Clubhouse." This name pays tribute to its long history as a gathering place.
