Lado Aleksi-Meskhishvili (born February 16, 1857 – died November 24, 1920) was a famous Georgian actor and theater director. People also knew him as Lado Meskhishivili. He is buried in the Didube Pantheon in Tbilisi, Georgia. His son, Shalva Aleksi-Meskhishvili, became a well-known Georgian lawyer and politician.

Life and Career of Lado Aleksi-Meskhishvili

Lado Aleksi-Meskhishvili was born in Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia. He first studied medicine at the University of Moscow. However, he had to stop his studies because of an illness. He then returned to Georgia and worked as a teacher in Telavi.

After some time, Lado decided to follow his passion for acting. He had already done some amateur acting. In 1881, he joined the Georgian-language acting group in Tbilisi. He became the director of this group for several years. He led it from 1890 to 1896 and again from 1910 to 1914.

Acting in Different Theaters

Lado also directed the Kutaisi Theater. He worked there from 1897 to 1906 and again from 1914 to 1915. He also performed with Russian acting groups. This was from 1887 to 1890 and from 1906 to 1910. One of these famous groups was the Moscow Art Theatre. He performed there from 1906 to 1907.

Lado's Film Roles

Between 1916 and 1918, Lado Aleksi-Meskhishvili stayed in Russia. During this time, he acted in several movies. Some of his films included Fathers and Children, Lost Necklace, The Shame of the Orlovs, and Three Thieves.

Lado's Artistic Contributions

Lado Aleksi-Meskhishvili was known as a very strong and heroic actor. He used his performances to share new ideas with people. He even took part in street fights during the Russian Revolution of 1905. This shows how much he believed in his ideas.

Plays and Translations

Lado directed more than one hundred plays during his career. He also translated many plays from other languages into Georgian. This helped bring new stories to the Georgian stage.

Lado was especially successful in musical comedies when he was younger. This was because he had a great ear for music and a wonderful voice. People loved and respected him very much. For example, in 1903, he became ill. When the public found out, people in Georgia collected money to send him to Vienna for medical treatment.

Honors and Legacy

After his death, Lado Aleksi-Meskhishvili received a special honor. In 1930, he was given the title of People's Artist by Soviet Georgia. This title recognized his great talent and importance. In 1940, the Kutaisi Drama Theatre was named after him. This was to remember his amazing work and dedication to theater.
