Lady Agnes Stewart facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lady Agnes Stewart (born 1480, died 1557) was an important Scottish noblewoman. She was a cousin to King James IV of Scotland. Agnes was born to James Stewart, the first Earl of Buchan, and Margaret Murray. In 1552, her birth was officially recognized by the Scottish government, which was a big deal at the time.

Lady Agnes's Marriages

Lady Agnes Stewart was married four times during her life. This was common for noblewomen in those days, especially if their husbands died young.

Her first husband was Adam Hepburn, 2nd Earl of Bothwell. They married in August 1511. Sadly, he died fighting in the Battle of Flodden in 1513. After this marriage, Agnes was often called Lady Bothwell or the Countess of Bothwell.

Next, she married Alexander Home, 3rd Lord Home. This marriage ended in 1516 when he passed away. During this time, she was known as Lady Home.

Her third husband was Robert Maxwell, 5th Lord Maxwell. They were married until he died in 1546. She was then known as Lady Maxwell.

Finally, Lady Agnes married Cuthbert Ramsay, a businessman from Edinburgh. He lived longer than she did. Even after marrying Cuthbert, she continued to use one of her earlier noble titles. In early modern Scotland, women often kept their own family names or previous titles instead of using their husband's last name.

In 1520, Margaret Tudor, who was the queen and widow of King James IV, gave Lady Agnes Stewart some important lands. These included the forest lands of Tinnis and the Tinnis tower and place, along with nearby forest areas. This shows how important and well-connected Lady Agnes was.

Her Children

Lady Agnes Stewart had at least one child with her second husband, Alexander Home, 3rd Lord Home:

  • Janet Home, who married John Hamilton of Samuelston.
