Lady Charlotte Elliot was a Scottish poet. She was born on July 22, 1839, in Farnell, Scotland. Her original name was Charlotte Carnegie. She wrote three books of poems. Many of her poems explored feelings of sadness and being alone. She passed away on January 15, 1880.

Early Life of Lady Charlotte

Charlotte was the daughter of Sir James Carnegie and Charlotte Lysons. Her brother was James Carnegie. He later became the 9th Earl of Southesk. In 1855, when she was 16, she was given the special title of "Lady" by the King or Queen. This meant she had the same social rank as an earl's daughter.

Her Poetic Works

A few years after her first husband passed away, Charlotte published her first book of poems. It was called Stella, and other poems (1867). She used the pen name "Florenz" for this book.

Stella, and other poems

The main poem in the collection is "Stella." It tells a sad love story. It is about Count Marone and Stella in Italy. Count Marone wanted to unite Italy. Stella was from a noble family that did not agree with this idea. Stella's early death made Count Marone seek danger. He went to battle to try and forget his sadness. Other poems in this book are about strong and difficult feelings. For example, "Desolate" is about feeling abandoned by someone you love. "The Prayer of the Penitent" talks about feelings of shame.

Medusa, and other poems

Ten years after her second marriage, Charlotte published her second book. It was called Medusa, and other poems (1878). This time, she used her married name. She dedicated the book to her husband, Frederick. The poem "Medusa" is about the Medusa from old Greek stories. Charlotte's poem shows sympathy for Medusa. It describes her feelings of "despair" and "unspeakable woe." These feelings came from the time she was changed until her death. The other poems in this book are often sad. They explore ideas about time, love, and death.

Mary Magdalene and other poems

A third book of her poetry was published after she died. It was called Mary Magdalene and other poems (1880). She had asked that only 50 copies be printed.

Lady Charlotte's Personal Life

In 1860, Charlotte married her first husband, Thomas Fotheringham. She became a widow in 1864.

In 1868, Charlotte married her second husband, Frederick Boileau Elliot. Frederick was the fifth son of Admiral George Elliot. Lady Charlotte and Frederick had one son who survived:

  • Gilbert Compton Elliot (1871–1931). He served in the Black Watch, which is a famous army group. He became a Lieutenant. He married an American heiress named Marguerite "Rita" Barbey.

Charlotte passed away on January 15, 1880. Her husband, Frederick, died later that same year on December 23.
