Lady Jane Ruthven, also known as Lady Jean Ruthven, was a Scottish noblewoman who lived in the 1600s. She worked at the royal court of Queen Christina of Sweden as a lady-in-waiting, specifically as a hovfröken (which means maid of honour). She passed away in 1668.

Early Life and Family Connections

Lady Jane Ruthven was the daughter of Patrick Ruthven, 1st Earl of Forth. Her father was a Scottish general who worked for Sweden from 1609 to 1637. Her mother was Jane Henderson. Jane also had an uncle, General John Henderson, who also served in Sweden. Both her father and uncle were important figures in the Swedish military. Jane stayed in touch with her uncle even after he left Sweden.

Life at the Swedish Royal Court

Lady Jane Ruthven was part of Queen Christina's court. Queen Christina was a very unique ruler. While she didn't always show much interest in her female courtiers, Lady Jane Ruthven was one of the few exceptions. She was part of a small group of women who were close to the Queen.

Lady Jane Ruthven was quite important at the Swedish court. She had influence with Queen Christina. Because of this, important people, like the English ambassador Bulstrode Whitelocke, sought out her company. They wanted to spend time with her to gain favor or information at the Swedish court.

Lady Jane Ruthven got married to James Forrester, who was the 2nd Lord Forrester of Corstorphine. Their marriage took place sometime before July 1661.
