Lake Boga mission facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Lake Boga Mission was a special place set up a long time ago, in 1851. It was located on the southeastern shores of Lake Boga in Victoria, Australia. This mission was started by a religious group called the Moravian Church. They built it on the traditional lands of the Wemba-Wemba people.

Two missionaries from Germany, Andreas Täger and Friedrich Spieseke, led this effort. They hoped to create farms, raise animals, and open a school. Their main goal was to invite local Aboriginal people, teach them about Christianity, and help them adopt a different way of life. The mission was given a large area of land, about 640 acres, for these plans.

Why Was Lake Boga Mission Started?

The Moravian Church wanted to share their Christian faith with Aboriginal people in Australia. They believed that by teaching new skills like farming and reading, they could help people. This was a common idea during that time, where European settlers often tried to change the ways of life of Indigenous peoples.

Who Were the Moravian Missionaries?

Andreas Täger and Friedrich Spieseke were the two main people who started the Lake Boga Mission. They came all the way from Germany. Their job was to set up the mission, build homes, and try to connect with the local Wemba-Wemba community.

What Challenges Did the Mission Face?

The Lake Boga Mission faced many problems, making it hard for it to succeed.

Connecting with the Wemba-Wemba People

One of the biggest difficulties was attracting the Wemba-Wemba people to the mission. The missionaries hoped many would come and join their community. However, no one from the Wemba-Wemba community ever chose to convert to Christianity during the mission's time.

Other Difficulties and Disputes

The mission also had other issues. There were disagreements about land and fences. Local landholders were not always friendly towards the mission. Problems also arose with local government authorities. Even gold miners passing through the area caused trouble by crossing the mission's property.

When Did the Lake Boga Mission Close?

Because of all these challenges, the Lake Boga Mission could not continue. It officially closed on July 1, 1856.

What Happened to the Missionaries?

After the mission closed, Andreas Täger and Friedrich Spieseke left the site. They returned to London, England, without getting permission from their church leaders. This caused them to be viewed unfavorably by their church.

The Next Moravian Mission

Even after the Lake Boga Mission closed, the Moravian Church did not give up. Friedrich Spieseke, along with another missionary named Friedrich Hagenauer, later started a new mission. This new mission, called Ebenezer Mission, was established in 1859 at Lake Hindmarsh.
