Lake Lotela is a natural freshwater lake located in Highlands County, Florida. It is one of the biggest lakes in the county. The lake covers an area of about 802-acre (3,250,000 m2).
Lake Lotela is quite deep, reaching a maximum depth of 36 feet (11 m). You can find it at the southeast edge of Avon Park, Florida. The main part of the lake is round, and it has two smaller round sections called coves. One cove is on the northwest side, and the other is on the west side. The lake is roughly 1 mile (1.6 km) wide.
Life Around Lake Lotela
Most of Lake Lotela is surrounded by homes. Many families live in these houses. On the east and south sides of the lake, there is a golf course.
History of the Pinecrest Hotel
A large building was constructed on the east side of Lake Lotela in 1926. It was first built as a clubhouse for the Pinecrest Country Club. Later, it became a famous hotel called the Pinecrest Hotel. More parts were added to the building in 1936 and 1950.
After being a hotel, the building changed purposes. It became a boarding school for girls, known as the Highlands School. In 1994, the property was sold again. It then became the Maharishi School of Vedic Science, which eventually closed down.
In the year 2000, the old hotel building was recognized as important. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Sadly, a series of hurricanes hit Florida in 2004 and 2005. By this time, the old hotel was empty and damaged. It was eventually torn down in 2006 or 2007.
Fun Activities at Lake Lotela
Lake Lotela does not have public swimming beaches. However, it is a great place for fishing. Many people enjoy trying to catch fish here.
The lake also has two public boat ramps. These ramps make it easy for people to launch their boats onto the water. One boat ramp is on the south side of the lake, located on Lake Lotela Drive. The other ramp is in Avon Park, at the east end of Bohland Street.
