Lake Louisvilla, Louisville facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lake Louisvilla is a neighborhood located partly in Louisville, Kentucky. It sits between Westport Road in Louisville and KY 22 in Oldham County. This area was once a popular summer spot.

What is Lake Louisvilla?

Lake Louisvilla is a community that started in the 1920s. A "neighborhood" is a part of a town or city where people live. This particular neighborhood is special because it was built around a lake that no longer exists.

A Summer Getaway

In the 1920s, Lake Louisvilla was created as a "summer resort." A resort is a place where people go to relax and have fun, often on vacation. City dwellers from Louisville would visit Lake Louisvilla to enjoy the lake and escape the summer heat. It was a popular place for swimming, boating, and other outdoor activities.

Why the Lake Disappeared

The lake at Lake Louisvilla was a man-made lake. It was held in place by a structure called a "dam." A dam is a barrier built across a river or stream to hold back water. In the late 1980s, the state of Kentucky decided to "drain" the lake. To drain a lake means to remove all the water from it. This was done because there were worries about the dam's "stability." Dam stability means how strong and safe the dam is. If a dam is not stable, it could break and cause flooding, which would be very dangerous. So, for safety reasons, the lake was drained, and now only the neighborhood remains.
