Lakeside is a neighborhood where people live in Shreveport, Louisiana, USA. It's a place with a long history, from old homes built after the American Civil War to new community efforts today.

A Look Back at Lakeside's Homes

In the 1920s and 1930s, many homes in Lakeside were called shotgun houses. These were simple homes, often without indoor bathrooms. People rented them for a very low price, sometimes just a few dollars a week. These houses were built on uneven land, and the streets around them were not paved.

Later, in the 1960s, a new part of the neighborhood called Lakeside Acres was built. This area had nicer homes. Many doctors, teachers, and lawyers lived there. The houses in Lakeside Acres are still standing today. Some older homes in the wider Allendale area, which includes parts of Lakeside, have become run-down or are being replaced with new buildings.

Community Changes and Growth

The first public housing complex in the area was finished in 1951. It was first called Elamito Terrace. Later, it was renamed Jackson Heights. In 2006, this building was taken down. New apartments were then built there, specifically for older people.

In 1992, a person named Mack McCarter started working to improve the community. He was part of an organization called Shreveport/Bossier Community Renewal (SBCR). His goal was to help solve social problems in Shreveport. In 2001, SBCR teamed up with The Fuller Center for Housing. Together, they began building new homes for families who needed affordable places to live. This work helps to make the neighborhood better. This good work has continued for over twenty years, with new homes still being built in 2022.
