Lalla Carlsen was a very famous Norwegian singer and actress. She was born Haralda Petrea Christensen on August 17, 1889, and passed away on March 23, 1967. Many people remember her as one of Norway's most amazing and legendary revue artists.

About Lalla Carlsen

Lalla Carlsen was born in a place called Svelvik. Her father, Carl Alfred Christensen, was a shipmaster. When Lalla was ten years old, her family moved to Oslo, which was then called Christiania.

In 1917, she married Carsten Carlsen, who was a composer and pianist. After they got married, she became known by her stage name, Lalla Carlsen.

Lalla and Carsten had two children. Their daughter, Gjertrud Carlsen, was also a pianist. She wrote songs for children and was the mother of a well-known TV personality named Vibeke Sæther. Their son, Arne-Carsten Carlsen, became an author and journalist.

Lalla's Amazing Career

Lalla Carlsen studied music at the Oslo Conservatory of Music from 1909 to 1913. She trained to be a soprano singer, which means she could sing very high notes.

Early Performances

Lalla started her professional acting career in 1914 in a musical comedy. From 1915 to 1947, she performed regularly at a famous cabaret called Chat Noir. She also performed at other theaters like Casino and the Carl Johan Theater. Her husband, Carsten Carlsen, often played the piano for her shows at Chat Noir.

Lalla became very famous after singing "Å blei d'a dei (din blei)?" in a 1925 show. This song really made her a star!

Movies and More

Lalla Carlsen also acted in movies. Her first film was a silent movie in 1927. She even starred as a singer in a movie called Lalla vinner in 1932. Between 1928 and 1931, she recorded about forty songs and comedy skits.

During World War II, Lalla continued to perform at the Carl Johan Theater. Her husband wrote music for many of her songs during this time. In 1945, she sang a very popular song called Norge i rødt, hvitt og blått (Norway in Red, White, and Blue), which people loved.

After the war, Lalla Carlsen appeared in many more films, playing smaller but important roles. She was in about twenty films between 1947 and 1965. Some of these include I slik en natt (1958) and Bussen (1961).

She also performed on radio and television. Lalla acted in plays by famous writers like Eugene O'Neill and Henrik Ibsen. She played characters like "Mrs. Peachum" in The Threepenny Opera and "Aase" in Peer Gynt.

Lalla Carlsen passed away in Oslo on March 23, 1967.

Lalla's Legacy

Lalla Carlsen received many honors for her work. In 1949, she was given the King's Medal of Merit in gold, which is a very special award. In 1958, she became an honorary member of the Norwegian Actors' Equity Association.

To remember her, a statue of Lalla Carlsen was placed in her hometown of Svelvik in 1989. A street in Oslo, where she lived, is also named Lallakroken in her honor.

Her son, Arne-Carsten Carlsen, wrote a book about her life called Lalla og hennes verden (Lalla and Her World) in 1989.
