Lala Fatima N'Soumer (born in 1830, died in 1863) was a brave Algerian woman who became a leader in the fight against French colonial rule. She was known for her strong religious beliefs and her courage in battle. Many people saw her as a symbol of resistance and a hero for her people.

Early Life and Spiritual Journey

Lala Fatima N'Soumer was born in 1830 in a village called Warja. Her family was very religious and followed the Rahmani spiritual path. Her father, Sidi Mohamed bin Issa, was a respected religious leader. Her mother's name was Khadija Lala.

Fatima grew up with four brothers. Her oldest brother was named Al-Taher. People described her as beautiful and well-mannered. When she was sixteen, she was arranged to marry a man named Yahya Nath Ikhoulaf. However, she chose a different path. She decided to dedicate her life to prayer and religious study. She became very knowledgeable in religious sciences.

After her father passed away, Lala Fatima felt alone. She left her hometown and moved to the village of Soumer. Her older brother, Si Taher, lived there. She became known as "Fatima N'Soumer" because of this village. Her brother was also very learned in religious and worldly knowledge. He became a leader in the Rahmani spiritual center in the area. Lala Fatima learned a lot from him.

Leading the Resistance

Lala Fatima showed that women could also lead the fight for freedom in Algeria. She proved that leadership was not just for men. She joined forces with other leaders and village elders. Together, they began to fight against the French occupation armies.

One of the first big battles happened in the village of Tzrouzt. General Maysat's French forces fought against the local people. The villagers fought bravely but had to retreat because the French had more power. General Maysat then had to pass through two difficult areas: Shishkirt and Thiri Bouiran.

During this time, Lala Fatima N'Soumer led a group of women. They stood on a hill near the battlefield. They cheered on the men with loud calls and encouragement. This made the fighters even more determined to resist. Cherif Boubaghla, another important leader, was wounded in this battle. Lala Fatima N'Soumer personally cared for him.

The Algerian fighters achieved more victories against the French. These wins happened in areas like Ilti, Tahlit Nath, Borgah, Tourette Musa, and Tizi Puyber. Because of these defeats, the French authorities gathered a very large army. Marshal Randon led this army, and Marshal Mac Mahon brought more equipment from Constantine.

This large French army came to fight Lala Fatima's army. Her army had about 7,000 fighters. When the battle became intense, the French used a harsh method. They killed all family members without mercy. On July 11, 1857, Lala Fatima N'Soumer was arrested. She passed away in September 1863, at the age of 33.
