Lallie Charles (born Charlotte Elizabeth Martin, 1869–1919) was a talented Irish photographer. She was one of the most successful women portrait photographers of her time. Her sister, Rita Martin, also became a famous photographer. Together, they were very well-known in the early 1900s.

Lallie Charles was born in Ireland. She later married Georges Garet-Charles, a photographer in London. She later married Herbert Carr.

Becoming a Famous Photographer

Lallie Charles was known as a "society photographer." This meant she took pictures of important and well-known people. In 1896, she opened her first photography studio. It was called The Nook and was in London.

Working with Her Sister

In 1897, Lallie's sister, Rita Martin, started working with her. They worked together for several years. Then, in 1906, Rita opened her own studio. It was on Baker Street in London. The sisters became friendly competitors.

The next year, Lallie moved her studio to Curzon Street. She became known as the "foremost female portrait photographer of her day." This means she was seen as the best woman photographer around.

Her Work and Influence

One of Lallie Charles's photos was very special. It was a picture of a young girl. This photo was colored and used on the cover of The Royal Magazine. This magazine was first published in 1898.

Lallie Charles was inspired by another pioneer photographer, Alice Hughes. Other important women photographers of her time included Christina Broom, Kate Pragnell, and Lizzie Caswall Smith.

A famous photographer named Mme Yevonde learned from Lallie Charles. Even Cecil Beaton, a very famous photographer, posed for a family portrait at her studio when he was young. He later wrote about this experience. He said that Lallie Charles and her sister Rita posed people in a soft, natural light. This made their photos look very fashionable.

Lallie Charles passed away in London on April 5, 1919.

Her Legacy

Today, some of Lallie Charles's and Rita Martin's original photo negatives are kept safe. They are at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Their niece donated them in 1994. This helps us remember their amazing work.
