Park History: From Coal to Camping
The area where Lamoine State Park is now used to be a very different place. In the early 1900s, it was a special station for the U.S. Navy. This station opened in 1902.
What Was a Coaling Station?
This Navy spot was a "coaling station." This means it was a place where Navy ships could stop to get more coal. Back then, many warships ran on coal. They needed these stations to refuel during their journeys.
Why the Station Closed
By 1912, the coaling station stopped working. Technology was changing fast! New warships were being built that didn't use coal anymore. Because of these changes, coaling stations became old-fashioned and were no longer needed.
How it Became a State Park
After the Navy stopped using the land, the state of Maine took it over. This happened in 1949. Over the next few years, during the 1950s, the land was turned into the beautiful state park we know today.
