Landscape with the Burial of St Serapia facts for kids
Landscape with the Burial of St. Serapia is a famous painting created by the French artist Claude Lorrain between 1639 and 1640. It's an oil painting on canvas. This artwork was one of several that Philip IV of Spain, a king, asked Claude Lorrain to paint. Today, you can see it in the Prado Museum in Spain.
The painting shows the burial of Saint Serapia. She was a slave who served Saint Sabina. You can see an inscription on the lid of the stone coffin (sarcophagus) in the painting. It says something like "Burial of Saint Sabina... orders to bury Saint Serapia."
Saint Serapia was martyred, which means she died for her beliefs. This happened in a place called Vindena. We now know this place was near a town called Terni in Italy. However, when Claude Lorrain painted this, people thought Vindena was on the Aventine Hill in Rome. That's why the Basilica of Santa Sabina, a famous church, is located there.
