Laolao Bay facts for kids
Laolao Bay (also known as Lao Lao, Laulau, or Lau Lau) is a large bay located on the southeast side of Saipan. Saipan is one of the beautiful islands in the Northern Mariana Islands. The name Laolao comes from the Chamorro language, and it means shake, vibrate, quiver, totter, or tremble. Sometimes, people also call it Magicienne Bay.
Geography of Laolao Bay
Laolao Bay covers a big part of Saipan's east coast. It stretches for almost one-sixth of the island's eastern shoreline. From the south, it starts near Dandan and goes all the way to Kagman cape in the northeast. The village of San Vicente is located right in the middle of the bay's coast.
Laulau Bay Village
"Laulau Bay village" is also the name of a special area defined by the U.S. government for counting people, called a census-designated place (CDP). This village is located along a part of the bay's coastline. In 2010, about 226 people lived in this area.
Understanding "Laolao"
Locally, people often just call the entire Laolao Bay area "Laolao." However, it's important to know the difference between Laolao Bay and "Chalan Laulau." "Chalan Laulau" is another CDP, but it's located on the west side of Saipan. It's part of a neighborhood called Oleai, which is also known as San Jose. So, while both names sound similar, they refer to different places on the island.
