Lapidary clubs are groups where people learn about and work with stones, minerals, and gemstones. They help members learn how to shape, polish, and finish different types of rocks. These clubs also teach skills like making jewellery, cutting special shapes called cabochons, and adding shiny flat surfaces called facets to stones. Members can also learn carving, making glass beads, and other crafts.

What Do Lapidary Clubs Do?

Lapidary clubs are all about exploring the world of rocks and gems. They offer many fun activities for people who love stones.

Learning Stone Crafting

  • Jewellery Making: Members learn to turn beautiful stones into rings, necklaces, and other jewellery.
  • Cabochon Cutting: This involves shaping and polishing a stone into a smooth, rounded dome. It's often used for pendants or rings.
  • Faceting: This is a precise way of cutting many flat surfaces, or facets, onto a gemstone. It makes the stone sparkle brightly.
  • Stone Carving: Some clubs teach how to carve detailed shapes and designs from different types of stone.
  • Glass Beadmaking: This craft involves melting glass rods and shaping them into colourful beads.

Exploring and Collecting Gems

Lapidary clubs also organize exciting outdoor trips. These trips are called fossicking trips. Members go to special places to search for gemstones or interesting mineral specimens. It's like a treasure hunt in nature!

Where Are Lapidary Clubs Popular?

Lapidary clubs are very popular in certain parts of the world. They are especially common in the United States of America and Australia. Many of these clubs started in the 1950s and 1960s. This was a time when more people became interested in hobbies like rock collecting and crafting.

Lapidary Clubs in Australia

In Australia, there is a main group that connects all the lapidary clubs. It is called the Australian Federation of Lapidary & Allied Crafts Associations Inc. Most people call it AFLACA.

What is AFLACA?

AFLACA is like a big umbrella organization. It has eight smaller groups that are members. These groups together represent hundreds of lapidary and related clubs across Australia. AFLACA helps to support and promote the hobby of lapidary throughout the country.

The GEMBOREE Event

Every year, AFLACA hosts a big event called GEMBOREE. This is a national competition and show for gems, lapidary work, and minerals. At GEMBOREE, you can see amazing exhibitions and displays of beautiful stones and crafted items. Members from different lapidary clubs also compete for awards in many different lapidary categories. It's a great way to see incredible work and learn more about this fascinating hobby!
