Building a Dream: The Theatre's Start
The Larcom Theatre was built in 1912 by two brothers, Harris and Glover Ware. They were from Marblehead, Massachusetts, and used to be musicians in vaudeville shows. They named the theatre after Lucy Larcom, a poet who was born in Beverly.
The Magic Era: Le Grand David's Home
In 1984, the Le Grand David Spectacular Magic Company bought the Larcom Theatre. They started a huge project to fix it up. This restoration was even bigger than their earlier work on the Cabot Street Cinema Theatre. The theatre was completely renovated, from the balcony all the way down to the boiler room.
A Grand Renovation
In October 1985, the Le Grand David group started their second main show at the theatre. It featured magic, music, comedy, and dance. The show was created in the style of performances from the late 1800s.
Expanding the Magic
In 1995, the Le Grand David Company added a new part to the Larcom Theatre. This new section was next to the original building at 9 Wallis Street. It included a beautiful lobby called the Grand Salon, decorated with oak, marble, and brass. The new wing also had a full kitchen, a place for rehearsals, and three galleries. These galleries showed off Le Grand David's magic tools and posters. There was also a library, a meeting room, a guest suite, and an apartment for a caretaker.
The End of a Magical Run
The Le Grand David Magic show ended in May 2012. This happened after the founder of the show, Cesareo Pelaez, passed away in March of that year.
