The Sophora tetraptera, often called the large-leaved kōwhai, is a special tree found only in the central east part of New Zealand's North Island. It's one of eight types of kōwhai trees. This particular kōwhai stands out because its leaves are bigger and spaced further apart than its relatives.

What is Kōwhai?
Kōwhai trees are famous for their bright yellow, pea-shaped flowers. These flowers usually appear in spring, making the trees look very cheerful. Kōwhai trees are an important part of New Zealand's natural environment.
Where Kōwhai Trees Grow
Most kōwhai species grow naturally across New Zealand. However, the large-leaved kōwhai (Sophora tetraptera) is a bit pickier. It prefers to grow only in the central eastern area of the North Island. This makes it quite unique among its kōwhai cousins.
Why Kōwhai is Special
Kōwhai trees are well-loved in New Zealand. They are often seen in gardens and parks because of their beautiful flowers. Many native birds, like the tūī and bellbird, love to drink the sweet nectar from kōwhai flowers. This helps the trees by spreading their pollen.
Understanding the Name
The scientific name of a plant often tells us something about it.
The Name Sophora
The first part of the name, Sophora, comes from an Arabic word. This word was used to describe any tree that had flowers shaped like peas. If you look closely at a kōwhai flower, you'll see it really does look like a pea flower!
The Name Tetraptera
The second part of the name, tetraptera, comes from ancient Greek. It means "four-winged." This part of the name refers to the fruit of the kōwhai tree. Kōwhai fruits are long pods that have four distinct ridges or "wings" along their sides.
Life Cycle of the Kōwhai Tree
Kōwhai trees grow from seeds. These seeds are found inside the long, winged pods that form after the flowers bloom.
From Seed to Tree
When a kōwhai seed falls to the ground, it can sprout and begin to grow. Over many years, a small seedling will grow into a strong, tall tree. Kōwhai trees can live for a long time, providing food and shelter for many creatures.
Flowering and Fruiting
The bright yellow flowers of the kōwhai usually appear in spring, from August to November. After the flowers are pollinated, they develop into seed pods. These pods ripen over the summer and autumn, turning brown and eventually splitting open to release the seeds.
