The Larkin Administration Building in 1906

The Larkin Building was a very special office building. It was designed in 1904 by a famous architect named Frank Lloyd Wright. The building was finished in 1906 for the Larkin Soap Company, which was located in Buffalo, New York.

A Unique Design by a Famous Architect

The Larkin Building was made of dark red bricks and had pink mortar, which is the cement-like material that holds bricks together. It was five stories tall and used a strong steel frame for its structure. This was a modern way to build at the time.

What Made the Larkin Building Special?

This building was known for many new and exciting ideas. Imagine an office building with:

  • Air conditioning: This was very new and helped keep the building cool and comfortable.
  • Stained glass windows: These beautiful windows added color and art to the building.
  • Built-in desks: The furniture was part of the building's design, making everything fit perfectly.
  • Suspended toilets: Even the bathrooms had a modern touch with toilets that hung from the wall.

Even though it was an office building, it really showed off Frank Lloyd Wright's unique style of architecture. A sculptor named Richard Bock also helped by adding artistic decorations to the building.

Where Was the Larkin Building?

The Larkin Building was located at 680 Seneca Street in Buffalo, New York. Sadly, this amazing building was taken down, or demolished, in 1950.
