Larreynaga is a municipality in the León Department of Nicaragua. It is the second-largest municipality in this area. The main town in Larreynaga is called Malpaisillo. About 33,000 people live here, and the population is growing steadily each year.
A Look Back: Larreynaga's History
Larreynaga was officially started on August 11, 1944. It was founded by a person named Colonel Manuel Ignacio Pereira Quintana. Later, in September 1968, the town of Malpaisillo was officially declared a city. The municipality got its name "Larreynaga" from Miguel Larreynaga. He was a famous Nicaraguan thinker, a person who cared about human well-being, a lawyer, and a poet.
The Cerro Negro Volcano
Larreynaga is home to the Cerro Negro volcano. This volcano is only about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the city of Malpaisillo. Cerro Negro has erupted many times since it first became active. The last time it erupted was on August 5, 1999, and it lasted for two days.
In recent years, the Cerro Negro volcano has become a very popular place for an exciting sport called sandboarding. People slide down the volcano's slopes on boards, similar to snowboarding but on sand!
