The Lars Petterson-Adolph Carlson Three-Decker is a special kind of old house in Worcester, Massachusetts. It's called a "three-decker" because it has three apartments, one on top of the other. This historic building was constructed around 1918 by Lars Petterson, who was a builder in the area.

The house shows off a cool style called Colonial Revival, which was popular back then. Because it's so well-preserved and important to history, this house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

What Does a Three-Decker Look Like?

The Lars Petterson-Adolph Carlson Three-Decker is found in a quiet, residential part of Worcester, in a neighborhood called Greendale. It's a three-story building made of wood, with a sloped roof. The outside of the house is covered in modern siding.

Unique Features of This House

The front of the house isn't perfectly even. On one side, there are porches stacked up, one for each floor. On the other side, there's a window section that sticks out with many sides, like a polygon. Instead of a typical side bump-out, this house has a rectangular part that sticks out with a fancy triangular top, called a pediment.

The front porch used to have round columns, but now it has square posts. There were also decorative wooden shingles between each floor. At the very top of the house, the gable (the triangular part of the wall under the roof) has a full pediment with a diamond-shaped window in the middle.

Who Built and Lived in This Historic Home?

This house was built around 1918 by Lars Petterson. He was a local contractor who built many three-decker homes in the Greendale area. This part of Worcester was growing fast at the time.

The Rise of Streetcar Suburbs

The Greendale area became what's known as a "streetcar suburb." This means it was a neighborhood built along a streetcar line, making it easy for people to travel to work. Residents could easily get to jobs downtown or at factories nearby. Many of the first people who lived in this house were immigrants from Sweden.
